What file type do engravers need?

Engravers need vector artwork: AI, EPS, or vector PDF files. Vector art scales to any size with clean edges, which is what an engraving machine follows. A JPG or PNG can often be redrawn into vector for a small art charge, but it cannot be engraved as-is with sharp results.

Vector vs raster, in one minute

Vector files describe shapes with math, so a logo redraws perfectly at any size. Raster files (JPG, PNG) are grids of pixels, so edges blur when scaled. Engraving and etching machines cut paths, and paths come from vectors. If your logo was ever professionally designed, a vector master exists somewhere; ask your designer or marketing team for the AI or EPS.

What to send

Best: AI, EPS, or PDF saved with live vector paths and fonts converted to outlines. Acceptable: a high-resolution PNG on a transparent background, at least 1000 pixels wide, which can usually be traced. Avoid: screenshots, logos pulled from a website, or anything under 500 pixels wide.

Fonts and small text

Convert fonts to outlines before sending, or name the font so the shop can match it. Very small text has physical limits: on metal, characters under about 1/16 inch fill in; on glass, sandblast etching wants slightly larger minimums. Your proof will flag any text below safe size.

Color, contrast, and single-color marks

Engraving is a one-color process; the mark is the material's exposed layer or the etched surface. Gradients and photographic effects must be simplified to solid shapes. Full-color reproduction is possible on acrylic and some badges via printing, a different process that pairs fine with engraving on the same piece.

When the art is bad and the deadline is real

A shop with an art department can redraw most logos from a fuzzy file in a day or two for a small charge. Plan for that when your only file is a JPG from an old email. Once redrawn, the vector stays on file and every future order starts clean.
